An Ideal Summer Night in Downtown Austin

Each night during the summer months, approximately 1,000,000 bats flight out from under the South Congress Bridge. This makes for an activity unique to Austin. It was a great year at Central Texas Valet!  We made many changes in how we operate and figured out our niche and went with it.  Our focus is special events, hotels, and heathcare valet throughout the state of Texas.  We have found that these areas are in fact what we should be doing now and we will continue to build on this.  Thank you to all our customers, clients, staff, and friends who supported us as we have made this transition over the past year.  We look forward to working with all of you in years to come.

What is Valet Parking?

There are times when parking your own vehicle at an Austin event can prove problematic. Inclement weather can turn the walk from the car to the venue into a torture test, ruining expensive clothing and shoes. There may not be enough available parking near the restaurant or concert hall, meaning a long walk through city streets at night. A driver may be able to drop his or her passengers off at the entrance to a glamorous event, but he or she will still have to make a less glamorous trek from the parking lot afterwards. Austin Valet parking is a service designed to eliminate the need for customers or guests to park their own vehicles. Statesman Article about Trulucks!

When Claudia Pérez steps into Truluck's Seafood, Steak and Crab House, she's walking into more than just its cool, dimly lighted lounge to enjoy the happy-hour specials, the relaxed atmosphere and the "super-friendly" bartenders and servers. She's relishing the ambiance, cuisine and superior service that are the hallmarks of a restaurant whose employees have voted it one of Austin's best places to work.

Employees of Truluck's, which ranks first in the midsize business category in the American-Statesman's 2011 Top Workplaces project, say the company invests heavily in their training and goes above and beyond to reward top performers. The company has its own constitution espousing its commitments to its employees and customers, stating that its mission is "to provide the best work experience of all our employees' lives, to ensure their prosperity, and promote personal development."

"They treat their employees just as importantly as they do their customers," said Jaden Harper, a hostess and one of about 60 employees at Truluck's downtown Austin location.

Teamwork, said bartender Benjamin Cantey, "is a vital part of what we do."

"You can't work here if you don't operate as a team," Cantey said.

The privately held chain, founded by Patti Turner and Stuart Sargent in 1992, has 11 locations in Texas, Florida and La Jolla, Calif. Truluck's even purchased its own fishery in Naples, Fla., to ensure fresh delivery of its signature item, Florida stone crab, within 24 hours of being harvested.

Jennifer Huddleston, a server and trainer at the Warehouse District location, said the restaurant is the most professional one she has worked at in her 10 years in the industry.

"We focus on integrity in our products and service, which is the glue that holds our success together," said Huddleston, a three-year employee.

Truluck's service is a byproduct of the importance it places on training its people, Huddleston and other employees say. Waiting tables requires a minimum of six years experience as a server, as well as stints at the host stand, the food line and the bar operation to learn all aspects of the operation. Then there are four days of hands-on training with a server followed by a mock session with a manager that must be passed before being put on the server schedule. The training process, said Huddleston, "is often referred to as information overload, and it is nearly impossible to learn everything in just two weeks," she said.

In addition, employees periodically are required to not only take menu tests to check their knowledge, but also must take culinary quizzes, Huddleston said.

"The things we need to know as servers are far beyond what you would imagine. \u2026 It is important to know everything we can about the products we feature in order to earn the trust of our customers."

Andrew Penridge is the maitre d' at Truluck's — a position he says the company created for him after he left to try out law school, then returned. "They worked with me to find a spot where I can thrive and give back to the company as well," said Penridge, whose job entails calling every customer the following day to inquire about their dining experience.

Penridge describes the company culture as "meritocracy" that recognizes and rewards its top performers. That can mean everything from gifts to scheduling preferences to — in the case of Truluck's chef Joe Prior — use of a company auto. Twice a year, the owners close the restaurant and treat employees and their families to a celebration at a special location.

Penridge said Truluck's places high importance on an open-door communication policy, one of the guiding tenets in its constitution. Employees are encouraged to speak to managers about any issue they may have, to nip it in the bud before it can create a tension-filled environment, Penridge said. If a problem isn't resolved at the manager level, an employee can go higher, to speak with the restaurant's operating partner. Allowing contact with a range of higher-ups in the corporation also helps build relationships, which in turn can help employees advance in the company , Penridge said. Nine of the 11 general managers/managing partners started their Truluck's careers as servers, including the downtown general manager, Riley Hutton.

Employees are evaluated every six months, and are given "the opportunity to express who we believe are the best team supporters, and also some folks that are maybe not meeting expectations."

But it's done in a constructive manner, Penridge said.

"It's not about pointing fingers, it's about trying to better ourselves collectively," Penridge said.

Prior said Truluck's also places a priority on fixing equipment when it's broken — "even if they don't make budget."

"They view it as an investment for the building," he said, reciting a management slogan that "the proper tool does the proper job."

Benjamin Grieser, a server, said he's waited tables at a lot of places, but at Truluck's "I'm really learning how a restaurant can run well."

"It blows other places out of the water," Grieser said. "I've never worked at a place with so much support from management. This place is the hardest — and most rewarding — of any place I've worked. At the end of the night, I feel like I've accomplished heroic things."

VERY IMPORTANT MESSAGE: PLEASE READ

We met with City of Austin officials yesterday regarding their proposed rate increase for valet parking services in Austin.  It does not look good at all.  They are proposing about 1000%+ increase to what we pay for the parking spaces that we rent from the city to operate our valet parking services.  This rate increase will force ALL valet parking companies in Austin out of business.  Our company employees around 100+ people in Austin alone.  All of these people will be out of work and we all will be looking for other jobs. 

There is something you can do to help.  On Tuesday October 11th at 6pm at City Hall the city of Austin staff will be bringing this rate increase recommendation to Austin City Council.  Please show your support if you can attend.

8/5/2011 - The city is proposing a substantial raise in valet parking permits for Austin valet services and business owners. This could lead to rate increases for valet parking customers. The city of Austin may consider making changes to valet operations downtown, including increasing permitting fees and creating valet zones.

 

The recommendations were included in a report on extended meter parking hours by the joint subcommittee of the Urban Transportation Commission and Downtown Commission to help manage downtown parking. The changes could go into effect before the beginning of next year, when most valet operators renew their permits.

 

With an increase in development downtown, on-street metered spaces have become a very valuable city asset. There are 2,400 on-street parking spaces downtown, according to city staff. These are usually the first to be taken by the estimated 10,000 cars parked downtown on Friday and Saturday nights. The rest park in about 5,000 surface-lot spaces and about half of the 7,600 garage spaces.

 

Based on how much a space can generate from the meter, on-street spaces are valued at $2,340 a year. If parking meter hours were extended, their value would increase to $6,000 a year. Valet operators downtown pay a permit fee of $50 a year, plus $10 per location, and businesses pay $250 a year to use a city parking space for valet operations. The costs are sometimes split up depending on deals made between valet operators and businesses.

 

“It’s been clear for several years that this is an issue that needed to be addressed,” City Council Member Laura Morrison said. “We have a lot of work to do to make this a fair situation.” Morrison is focused on the $250 annual fee business pay because it equates to about 69 cents a day to permanently occupy a parking space during certain hours.

 

“We don’t feel the permit fee matches the market value of those parking spaces,” said Richard MacKinnon, chairman of the city’s joint subcommittee on parking.

 

Michael Girard, owner of TenOak, Speakeasy and several other downtown properties, said he’s tired of getting hit with fee increases. “For the success of downtown businesses, valet needs to be treated as a service that is a positive for business as a whole instead of a revenue generator,” said Girard, who estimates that 30 percent of his customers use valet parking.

 

Morrison, however, said the city’s goal is not to raise more money. She would like to compare valet operators to other businesses that use city assets, paying either a general fee or a per-customer fee to share valuable resources with the city. “We need to look at the value of parking spaces,” MacKinnon said. “Are we giving a gift to anybody, or should we give that to the public to use?”

 

There are 17 permitted valet operators at 43 locations using 176 parking spaces mostly in downtown Austin, according to the Austin Transportation Department.

 

Corey Evers, president of the Valet Association, is concerned about the overall effect of the city substantially raising permitting fees, saying valet operators must buy at least three spaces. “All valet operators would have to raise their prices, and that would drive people out of downtown,” Evers said.

 

The Transportation Department said the three-space minimum is not a steadfast rule, but rather an engineering judgement, and that most valet operations have at least three spaces. In an informal survey of 8,482 Austin residents conducted by the parking subcommittee, 75 percent of the respondents said they parked on the street, 32 percent in a garage and 20 percent in a surface lot. Only 5 percent said they used valet parking. The most desired action that respondents wished the city would take was restricting valet parking operators’ ability to reserve on-street metered spaces, followed by adding more public parking garages and removing time limits from on-street parking.

 

MacKinnon said too many people fail to recognize that a valet operator using three on-street spaces can park “50 to 100 vehicles a night in a garage. We’d be in great shape if all our spaces could be that efficient.” Morrison would also like to see more coordination among valet operators and businesses to create valet districts that consolidate valet stands to create one zone per block. Some areas, such as Colorado Street between West Fourth and West Fifth streets, have had to share a valet stand because of lack of space.

 

Girard of TenOak said the city has done of a good job of encouraging a common stand on that block. His restaurants, Maria Maria and Frank, have an agreement with the one valet company on the block. Evers, on the other hand, thinks moving to valet zones may lead to favoritism to one business over another, depending on where the valet station is placed.

 

“Each valet location already has a deal with business owners,” Evers said. Gordon Derr, assistant director of planning at the city Transportation Department, said shareholder meetings should take place in August to discuss the proposed ordinance.
